PUEBLO, Colo. – A wall of wind is sweeping across southern Colorado this Monday morning, kicking up dust, snapping branches, and sending the smell of dry grass into the air from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the Arkansas Valley. Gusts topping 70 to 80 mph are roaring through mountain passes, prompting a Red Flag Warning through early evening as fire danger peaks along and south of Highway 50.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, humidity levels may drop near 12 percent by late morning while north winds strengthen over the Wet and Huerfano Mountains. Travel on I-25 through La Veta Pass could be hazardous for high-profile vehicles, and drivers should secure loose cargo or delay trips until winds diminish late tonight. Any spark could spread rapidly in the bone-dry grasslands west of Walsenburg and Trinidad.

By Tuesday, calmer air and cooler nights begin to settle in as a weak front slides across the Front Range. Temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-30s by early Wednesday—signaling the first hint of a fall freeze for low-lying valleys and rural gardens. Residents should protect tender plants, drain outdoor hoses, and check furnace filters before the season’s chill deepens.

Looking toward the weekend, models hint at another system brewing over the Four Corners. Moisture could return by Friday night with a 20–30 percent chance of showers and isolated mountain snow above 9,000 feet. For now, skies stay mostly sunny and crisp—a brief calm before late-October’s next cold stir.
