Grand Junction, Colorado – Drivers traveling through Colorado’s high country could face hazardous conditions beginning Wednesday evening as snow and gusty winds spread across western and central mountain ranges, impacting major passes and elevated roadways through early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for elevations above 8,000 feet across a broad portion of western Colorado, including the Elkhead and Park Mountains, Grand and Battlement Mesas, West Elk and Sawatch Mountains, and the Uncompahgre Plateau and Dallas Divide. Snow accumulations of 3 to 12 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph, creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Mountain communities and travel corridors such as Monarch Pass, McClure Pass, Crested Butte, Taylor Park, Marble, Ridgway, and areas near the Colorado National Monument could see snow-covered roads develop quickly Wednesday evening. Conditions may remain slick and snow-packed into Thursday morning, impacting early commutes and freight travel through higher terrain.

The Flat Tops region, including Buford and Trappers Lake, is also under a Winter Weather Advisory through early Friday, with up to 8 inches of snowfall possible above 8,000 feet. Winds may further complicate travel on exposed routes and ridgelines.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Travelers should check Colorado 511 for updated road information, as additional advisories could be extended if snowfall persists through Thursday night.
