GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to build across western Colorado today, bringing the risk of large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, storms will develop late this morning and afternoon, becoming widespread in coverage. While many storms will be routine, some could strengthen quickly, producing severe weather. Areas near recent wildfire burn scars face an elevated risk of dangerous flash flooding as heavy rain continues into the evening.
Communities including Grand Junction, Durango, Montrose and Glenwood Springs should prepare for sudden downpours and potential travel disruptions on mountain passes and highways. Large hail may damage vehicles and crops, while gusty winds could bring down tree limbs and power lines.
Residents are urged to stay weather aware, avoid flood-prone roads, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Emergency officials stress the importance of moving indoors at the first sign of thunder. A Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday evening, signaling more rounds of heavy rain could arrive.
