Denver, Colorado – Powerful winds are sweeping across Colorado’s Front Range and northeastern plains today, raising concerns for difficult travel, downed tree limbs, and dangerous fire weather conditions through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver and Boulder, gusty winds will intensify in and near the Front Range Mountains and foothills, with peak gusts reaching 55 to 70 mph in wind-prone locations. Breezy to windy conditions will also spread across much of the plains by afternoon, where gusts are expected to range from 15 to 30 mph.
The strongest winds are expected along mountain passes, exposed foothill communities, and east-west roadways, including stretches of Interstate 70, U.S. 36, and U.S. 285. High-profile vehicles may experience hazardous driving conditions, especially during the midday and afternoon hours. In the foothills, loose outdoor objects could be blown around, and isolated power disruptions are possible.
Fire danger is also a major concern. With very dry conditions and little recent snowfall, critical Red Flag conditions are expected across portions of Logan, Sedgwick, and Phillips counties from noon through late afternoon. Any spark could spread rapidly, prompting officials to urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure chains on trailers, and use extreme caution with equipment that could generate sparks.
Winds are expected to gradually ease this evening, but officials warn that additional fire weather alerts or wind advisories could be issued if conditions worsen later today.
