Grand Junction, Colo. – Thunderstorms will move into western Colorado and southeast Utah tonight, setting up several days of widespread rain that could lead to flash flooding in vulnerable areas by the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, moisture building from the south will bring showers and thunderstorms across the San Juan Mountains, Gunnison Valley, and the Colorado River Basin beginning Thursday morning. The heaviest rainfall is expected Friday into Saturday, when flash flooding could impact low-lying roads and burn scars.
Communities from Grand Junction to Durango and Moab could see multiple rounds of rain through early next week. The NWS said some areas may receive several inches of precipitation, increasing the chance of debris flows in steep terrain and canyon country.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and monitor local alerts, especially in mountain passes and along U.S. Highway 550. Residents should check sump pumps, clear drainage paths, and prepare for possible travel delays.
Rain chances remain high through Tuesday, with additional advisories possible as the system continues over western Colorado.
