Pueblo, Colo. – Strong storms could bring damaging winds and large hail across the eastern Colorado Plains today, with the greatest impacts expected Sunday afternoon into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms is in place through tonight, with threats including hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, locally heavy rainfall, and dangerous lightning. The risk area stretches from Trinidad and Lamar north through La Junta, Springfield, and Limon.
Localized flooding is possible in areas that receive repeated rounds of storms. Drivers along U.S. Highways 50 and 287 should be alert for rapidly changing road conditions, including reduced visibility from heavy rain and sudden wind gusts.
Power outages may occur where strong winds down tree limbs or power lines. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices in advance, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.
This system marks one of the more organized convective events of the season for southeastern Colorado. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, isolated strong storms could escalate quickly.
Storm chances taper overnight, but another round of unsettled weather is possible early next week. Stay tuned to local alerts and NWS updates throughout the day.
