Grand Junction, CO – The first real taste of December winter has settled over western Colorado, bringing gusty winds and light snow across the high country this morning. Drivers headed toward the I-70 corridor and Highway 550 should plan for delays as snow and blowing gusts up to 55 mph make for dangerous travel through mountain passes.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Hazardous Weather Outlook remains active for the northern and central Colorado mountains. Accumulations of 2 to 3 inches are expected at higher elevations, with drifting and reduced visibility reported near Vail Pass and the Roan and Tavaputs Plateaus. The valleys around Grand Junction will see less snow, but temperatures around 32°F could allow slick spots to form by mid-morning.

Strong winds will ease later Sunday, giving way to calmer, mostly sunny skies. Highs will climb into the mid-40s by Monday, but with overnight lows dropping into the 20s, refreezing on shaded roads and bridges could remain a hazard for early commuters.

By midweek, a steady warming trend takes hold, pushing highs near 50°F and bringing a brief return to dry, mild conditions before another chance of snow approaches late next weekend.
