Colorado Springs, CO – At sunrise this Sunday, frost coats rooftops and lawns from Monument to Fountain, the air crisp and still under a sharp 30°F chill. The Freeze Warning in place through 9 a.m. caps Colorado’s first major cold snap of the season — but it’s the warm, dry winds on the way that now demand attention.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Fire Weather Watch takes effect Monday morning as gusty northwest winds and low humidity sweep across El Paso County. Winds could reach 35 to 40 mph by midday, pushing warm, dry air back over the region and raising fire risk across open fields and foothills.

Today remains sunny and calm after the freeze, with highs near 75°F. Monday warms slightly, reaching 67°F, but the tradeoff comes with stronger winds and parched air. Residents planning travel or outdoor work should avoid open burning and secure loose materials before gusts increase.

Tuesday stays mild, with highs in the mid-60s and calmer winds, before another brief warm-up Wednesday. By late week, models hint at a cooler pattern returning — possibly the next setup for frost and light mountain snow above 10,000 feet.

After all, it’s classic October in southern Colorado: frost in the morning, fire risk by noon, and the mountains already whispering hints of early winter ahead.
