Grand Junction drivers could face dangerous conditions Sunday as strong storms bring heavy rain and possible flash flooding to western Colorado.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, scattered thunderstorms will develop by Sunday afternoon, with rain increasing overnight into Monday. Areas along Interstate 70 are most at risk for gusty winds up to 40 mph, frequent lightning, and sudden flooding.
Storms will be widespread through much of western Colorado, from the Grand Valley and Roan Plateau to the San Juan Mountains. Moisture continues to build through midweek, keeping daily storm chances high and raising the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and along canyons.
In Grand Junction, Sunday’s high will reach near 90 before storms push across the region. The heaviest rainfall is expected Sunday night into Monday, with a 70–80% chance of showers and possible thunderstorms. Conditions may cause delays along I-70, U.S. 50, and mountain passes including Vail and Glenwood Canyon.
Residents should avoid travel during downpours, stay clear of flood-prone roadways, and prepare for potential power disruptions from lightning. Outdoor recreation plans in the high country may be impacted by flash flooding in burn scar areas.
Showers remain likely through at least Wednesday, with highs staying below 90 for much of the week. Daily storm chances will keep travel risks in play until late week.
