Pueblo, Colorado – Dangerously hot conditions will grip eastern Colorado through the weekend, while mountain showers raise flash flooding concerns near burn scar zones west of the Continental Divide.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, temperatures will remain seasonably warm statewide, but areas east of I-25, including La Junta, Lamar, and Springfield, could see highs topping 104°F through Sunday. In contrast, showers and thunderstorms are expected to build over the mountains, particularly around the Continental Divide, starting Friday afternoon and continuing through the weekend.
Flash flooding is possible if storms develop over vulnerable areas such as Poncha Pass, Chalk Cliffs, and the Decker Burn Scar. These zones have a heightened risk due to past wildfire damage, which reduces the soil’s ability to absorb sudden rainfall. Drivers and hikers in those regions should be alert for rapidly rising water and debris flows.
Residents in Salida, Buena Vista, and surrounding areas should avoid trails and drainages during storm activity. Prepare by charging electronics, staying weather-aware, and avoiding low-lying roads if heavy rain begins.
Storm chances increase each afternoon through Sunday, with updated watches or warnings likely if rainfall rates intensify.
