Grand Junction, Colo. – Heavy rain and dangerous thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across northwest Colorado through Thursday night, with flash flooding and strong winds likely in parts of Mesa, Garfield, and Delta counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, an influx of tropical moisture is fueling scattered thunderstorms across the region Wednesday and Thursday. Some storms may produce frequent lightning and outflow winds up to 50 mph. Localized flash flooding is possible, especially in areas with poor drainage or recent burn scars.
In Grand Junction, a 30% chance of storms begins late Wednesday afternoon, increasing slightly overnight and into Thursday. Highs will approach 96°F Wednesday before dipping slightly into the mid-80s Thursday as storms roll through. Southeast Utah and western Colorado communities—including Moab, Rifle, and Montrose—may also see afternoon downpours and gusty winds.
Residents are urged to avoid low-lying roads during heavy rain, secure outdoor items, and delay high-country travel. Thunderstorm activity may continue into early Friday, before drier air returns for the holiday weekend with highs near 99°F by Sunday.
More advisories could be issued if flooding or damaging winds intensify.
