Grand Junction, CO — Residents across the Upper Gunnison River Valley and Upper Yampa River Basin are bracing for a prolonged stretch of dangerously cold weather, with temperatures plummeting to record lows through Tuesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the Gunnison area, remaining in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday, with temperatures as low as -30°. Another advisory will take effect tonight at 10 p.m., lasting until 11 a.m. Monday, with lows expected to reach -25°.
For Steamboat Springs and the Upper Yampa River Basin, a separate Cold Weather Advisory remains active until 9 a.m. Sunday, with temperatures nearing -25°. Both regions are under an Extreme Cold Watch beginning Monday evening, with possible wind chills as low as -40° in Gunnison and -35° in Steamboat Springs.
According to NWS, frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes if skin is exposed to these conditions. Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers, including hats and gloves, and ensure proper use of space heaters. Frozen pipes remain a concern; dripping faucets or insulation can prevent damage.
Pets and livestock should be sheltered, with access to unfrozen water and food. Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and avoid using generators indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
This extreme cold snap underscores the importance of preparedness in Colorado’s high-altitude regions.
