Denver, Colo. – Strong winds and dry lightning could combine to create dangerous wildfire conditions across parts of Colorado on Thursday afternoon. The National Weather Service warns that gusts between 25 and 35 mph, combined with humidity levels as low as 9%, may allow any new fires to spread rapidly, especially in higher terrain.
According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, widely scattered to scattered high-based thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon and evening. These storms will produce lightning and gusty winds but very little rainfall, raising the chance of fire starts in mountain regions, including Aspen, Vail, and surrounding counties.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities that could create sparks, including welding, campfires, and the use of gas-powered equipment in dry vegetation areas. Fire crews across the region are on heightened alert, and officials stress that quick-moving wildfires could be difficult to contain under these conditions.
The Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Thursday afternoon through the evening, with the possibility of Red Flag Warnings being issued if conditions intensify.
