Denver, Colorado – Temperatures are soaring past 90°F across the Colorado plains today, but residents in the northeast corner of the state should brace for more than just heat as strong to severe thunderstorms roll in by early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, the greatest storm threat stretches from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. across the northeast plains, including areas near Sterling, Akron, and Fort Morgan. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter and damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph are possible. The I-25 Corridor, including Fort Collins and Greeley, may also see isolated cells producing gusty outflow winds.

Drivers along Highway 34 and I-76 should use caution, particularly where visibility drops or hail begins. Boaters on regional lakes are urged to wear life jackets and monitor changing conditions closely.

Though the storms will be scattered, brief intense downpours and sudden wind shifts could lead to dangerous conditions for outdoor activities.

Saturday’s heat continues into the early evening before storms move eastward. Additional alerts may be issued depending on storm development.
