Yuma, CO – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Goodland, Kansas has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of eastern Colorado Monday, warning of critical fire weather conditions fueled by strong northwest winds and very low humidity.

The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. MDT Monday for Yuma, Kit Carson, and Cheyenne Counties in Colorado, as well as Wallace and Greeley Counties in Kansas.

Forecasters say winds between 30 and 40 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph, combined with relative humidity as low as 14%, could create unpredictable fire behavior. Any fires that start may spread rapidly and become uncontrollable.

The NWS warns that blowing dust may accompany the strong winds through the day, reducing visibility for drivers on rural highways and open plains.

Residents are urged to avoid burning, secure outdoor equipment, and refrain from driving over dry grass or brush. Officials also remind the public to never discard lit cigarettes and ensure vehicle tow chains are properly secured to prevent sparks.

These conditions follow a weekend of gusty winds and cooler air behind a cold front sweeping across the High Plains. The fire risk is expected to decrease slightly Tuesday as winds subside and humidity rises.
