Grand Junction, Colorado – Breezy winds and dry conditions across western Colorado could elevate fire danger near I-70 by Saturday afternoon, prompting a Fire Weather Watch for parts of Mesa and surrounding counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, east southeast winds up to 15 mph today will shift northwest later this afternoon, creating drier conditions over already parched terrain. While Friday remains mostly sunny with a high near 77°F, gusty winds up to 20 mph and low humidity are expected to set the stage for critical fire conditions by Saturday.

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for southeast Utah and southwest Colorado beginning Saturday, when temperatures rise to the low 80s and south winds increase. If dry thunderstorms develop, lightning could ignite fires in remote or rugged areas. Outdoor burning and open flame use should be avoided. Campers, hikers, and travelers along I-70 and nearby recreation areas should stay alert and check fire restrictions before heading out.

Rain chances return Saturday night, with a 70% chance of showers by Sunday afternoon and cooler highs near 68°F. Thunderstorms remain possible into Monday. Partly cloudy skies and highs in the low 70s return Tuesday.
