Pueblo, CO – Record-breaking heat is gripping southern Colorado today, but an even more immediate concern develops by Monday afternoon as critical fire weather conditions threaten rapid fire spread across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 80s, including near 87 degrees in Pueblo, challenging long-standing records. By Monday, southwest winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 10 percent.
These conditions have prompted a Fire Weather Watch for much of southern Colorado, including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and surrounding areas along the I-25 corridor. Dry fuels combined with strong winds could allow fires to spread quickly, especially in open terrain and foothill regions.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment that could spark, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. Even small ignition sources can lead to fast-moving wildfires under these conditions.
Cooler and more unsettled weather is expected by midweek, which may help reduce fire danger. Until then, critical conditions remain in place, and additional warnings could be issued as winds increase.
