Breckenridge, Colorado – Drivers crossing Colorado’s high mountain passes have hours to prepare before 4 to 8 inches of snow begin piling up by midnight, with up to 14 inches possible in the Indian Peaks by Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midnight through midnight Wednesday night for elevations above 9,000 feet across Summit County, the Mosquito Range, Indian Peaks, and parts of Grand, Boulder, Gilpin, Clear Creek and Park counties. Snow will develop rapidly late Tuesday evening, intensify overnight and continue through Wednesday morning before tapering during the afternoon.

Travel along Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel, Berthoud Pass, U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass and U.S. 285 near Kenosha Pass will become snow-covered and slick, especially between midnight and noon Wednesday. Breckenridge, Winter Park and areas near Mount Blue Sky could see reduced visibility during heavier bursts.

CDOT advises drivers to check road conditions at cotrip.org or by calling 511 before traveling. Carry chains, extra food, water and blankets in case of delays.

Snow tapers late Wednesday, but additional mountain snow showers remain possible later this week.
