The day begins with calm skies across the Denver metro, but a powerful wind event is already taking shape along the Front Range foothills and higher mountain passes. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Boulder warn of potentially damaging gusts reaching 75 to 90 mph through Wednesday morning, particularly near I-70 and U.S. 36 west of Denver.

High Wind Warnings are in effect for much of northern and central Colorado, where travel for high-profile vehicles could become dangerous. Winds strong enough to down trees and power lines are expected, with brief whiteout bursts possible at elevations above 9,000 feet as light snow develops midweek.

Tuesday’s gusts will build through the afternoon, peaking late in the day before slowly easing Wednesday. While Denver will see calmer conditions — with highs near 60°F and mostly sunny skies — foothill communities like Nederland, Golden Gate Canyon, and Estes Park should brace for severe wind stress.

By Thursday, the strong system will exit east, leaving mostly clear skies and milder air. However, another round of light snow is expected to brush the northern mountains by late Thursday night, keeping travel conditions unsettled at higher passes.

Drivers are urged to secure loose outdoor items and delay mountain travel until winds subside. Expect challenging crosswinds along I-25 north of Denver and reduced visibility near ridge tops.
