Pueblo, CO – Wind gusts up to 70 mph are whipping new snowfall across Colorado’s highest terrain this morning, creating near-whiteout conditions and dangerous travel above 11,000 feet through midnight MST. Blowing snow could shut down visibility on exposed ridgelines within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Eastern Sawatch Mountains and the Western Mosquito Range, including East Lake County above 11,000 feet, until midnight MST tonight. An additional 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected, with powerful winds capable of drifting snow across high mountain passes.
Areas near Climax and Bonanza will see the worst impacts, especially along exposed stretches of backcountry roads and high-elevation routes near Independence Pass. Strong crosswinds could make travel hazardous for high-profile vehicles, while drifting snow may block narrow mountain roads.
The combination of heavy gusts and accumulating snow could also bring isolated power outages and tree damage in vulnerable alpine areas. Travelers should check Colorado’s 511 road conditions before departure, carry winter survival gear, and avoid unnecessary high-elevation travel.
The advisory remains in effect until midnight, and additional statements may follow if winds or snowfall intensify.
