Denver, Colorado – Scattered thunderstorms and triple-digit heat index values are converging across Colorado’s Front Range Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing a risk of 60 mph wind gusts and triggering an air quality alert for millions.

According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, storms will fire up by Tuesday afternoon over the foothills and move east, with a few capable of producing strong, erratic winds. Gusts could reach 60 mph in northeastern Colorado, especially near Sterling and Fort Morgan. The main hazard Tuesday remains the combination of heat and wind, which may also elevate fire danger in dry grasslands.

A separate Ozone Action Day Alert is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday for the entire urban corridor from Fort Collins to Castle Rock. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment warns that ozone levels are reaching unhealthy levels for sensitive groups. Residents — especially children, older adults, and those with asthma — are advised to avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.

Denver, Aurora, Boulder, and Greeley will remain under the ozone alert until at least Wednesday evening. While storm chances drop Wednesday, another round of activity is expected by Thursday, ahead of Fourth of July celebrations.

⚠️ Warnings and alerts may be extended or reissued through the holiday weekend.
