Pueblo, Colorado – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire by late morning as southwest winds ramp up to 35 mph with gusts near 50 mph across southeast Colorado.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m. Wednesday for Crowley, Otero, eastern Las Animas, Kiowa, Bent, Prowers and Baca counties. Relative humidity is expected to fall as low as 12 percent, creating a volatile mix of dry fuels and powerful wind.
The highest risk stretches from La Junta and Ordway east through Lamar, Springfield and Eads, including the Comanche and Pinon Canyon grasslands. Open fields, rangeland and roadways along U.S. 50, U.S. 287 and Highway 96 could see fires spread rapidly if ignited. Blowing dust may also reduce visibility in rural areas.
Emergency managers urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, delay welding or equipment use that creates sparks and properly secure trailer chains to prevent roadside ignitions. Even a discarded cigarette could spark a fast-moving grassfire under these conditions.
Winds are expected to ease after sunset, but elevated fire danger could persist if dry air lingers. Additional statements or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen later this week.
