Pueblo, Colorado – Dangerous fire conditions are developing across southern Colorado today as strong winds and extremely dry air combine to create a high wildfire risk across mountain valleys and nearby plains.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday for the San Luis Valley, Lake County, and Chaffee County. Northwest winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, while humidity levels could drop as low as 10 to 15 percent, creating conditions where fires can spread rapidly.
Communities including Alamosa, Salida, Buena Vista, and Leadville face the highest risk this afternoon. Gusty winds across U.S. Highway 160, U.S. 285, and Highway 50 could quickly push flames across dry grass and brush if a fire starts.
Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay any activities that could produce sparks. Even small ignition sources such as equipment, campfires, or cigarettes could quickly lead to fast-moving grass fires.
Fire danger is expected to continue beyond today. A Fire Weather Watch is already in place for Thursday afternoon and evening across parts of southern Colorado, where another round of gusty winds and low humidity could keep wildfire risk elevated through the end of the week.
