Grand Junction, Colorado – Residents across western Colorado could see a dramatic weather shift over the next 48 hours, starting with strong winds today before a sharp temperature drop brings a potential freeze by Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, widespread wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph are expected today across the lower valleys and higher terrain. These gusty conditions may create difficult travel for high-profile vehicles along Interstate 70, U.S. Highway 50, and Highway 191, especially during the afternoon.

A cold front arriving this evening will quickly change the pattern. Forecasters say the system will bring mountain snowfall and significantly colder air across western Colorado by Sunday and into early Monday.

Temperatures Sunday will drop sharply, with highs running around 20 degrees colder than Saturday in many communities including Grand Junction, Montrose, and Rifle. By early Monday morning, overnight lows are expected to fall below freezing across the lower valleys, raising concerns for early blooming plants and agriculture.

Snow will primarily impact higher elevations, including the Elk Mountains, San Juan Mountains, and the central Colorado ranges, where accumulating snow is expected through Monday evening.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items due to the strong winds today and protect sensitive plants ahead of the Monday morning freeze risk. Cooler conditions will remain in place into early next week as the system moves across the region.
