Aspen, Colorado – Travel across Colorado’s high mountain passes could become dangerous through Wednesday as heavy snow and strong winds reduce visibility and cover roads above 9,000 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday for much of western Colorado’s पर्व terrain, including the San Juan Mountains, Elk Mountains, and Flat Tops. Snow totals between 6 and 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible. Wind gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph.

Key routes including Vail Pass, Red Mountain Pass, Monarch Pass, and roads near Telluride and Silverton will see periods of moderate to heavy snowfall. Blowing snow may create sudden whiteout conditions, especially in exposed areas.

In resort areas like Aspen, Snowmass, and Crested Butte, snowfall will intensify at times throughout the day, impacting both local travel and backcountry access.

Drivers are urged to slow down, carry winter gear, and check Colorado 511 road conditions before heading into the mountains. Travel delays and chain restrictions are possible.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Wednesday night, but hazardous travel may persist into the evening hours.
