Pueblo, Colorado – Travel over Colorado’s high mountain passes could become treacherous within hours Friday as up to 12 inches of snow and 50 mph wind gusts hammer elevations above 10,000 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the eastern San Juan Mountains until 11 p.m. Friday. Snow totals between 6 and 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible on south- and southwest-facing slopes. Strong winds will generate widespread blowing snow, sharply reducing visibility along exposed ridgelines.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate along U.S. Highway 160 at Wolf Creek Pass and along U.S. 64 near Cumbres Pass. Blowing and drifting snow may create sudden whiteouts, particularly during the afternoon when winds peak. Colorado Department of Transportation crews could implement traction laws or temporary closures if visibility drops below safe limits.

Drivers should delay high-elevation travel if possible. If travel is unavoidable, carry chains, extra food and water, a flashlight and fully charged devices. Check Colorado 511 for the latest road restrictions before departing.

Heavy snow will continue into Friday night, with the strongest impacts lingering through late evening. Additional travel advisories remain possible as conditions evolve.
