Grand Junction, Colo. – Temperatures across western Colorado surged into the upper 90s and low 100s on Saturday, raising fire danger concerns ahead of Sunday’s critical fire weather conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, Fire Weather Watches are in place from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday for much of northwest and west-central Colorado, including Grand Junction, Meeker, Rangely, and parts of the I-70 corridor. Afternoon highs reached 100°F in Moab and Green River, with Grand Junction topping out at 99°F. Breezy conditions and low humidity will combine to create an elevated wildfire risk.
Areas including Nucla, Montrose, Cortez, and Durango are seeing increasing dryness, while Vail, Aspen, and Steamboat Springs remain in the low to mid-80s. Though the higher elevations are cooler, fuels remain dry and winds are expected to increase Sunday afternoon.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and be fire-aware if recreating in dry brush or grassland areas. Stay hydrated, limit outdoor work during peak heat, and charge electronics ahead of potential power disruptions.
This fire-prone pattern is expected to persist through early next week, with additional advisories possible as the heat lingers.
