Denver, Colorado – Drivers crossing Colorado’s high country face near-zero visibility and wind gusts up to 50 mph through early Thursday, with Rabbit Ears Pass at risk of sudden whiteout conditions within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for West Jackson and West Grand Counties above 9,000 feet until 5 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters expect an additional 5 to 10 inches of snow, combined with powerful wind gusts capable of blowing snow across roadways and reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less.

Rabbit Ears Pass is the primary concern, where snow squalls Wednesday afternoon and evening could trigger intense bursts of snowfall that rapidly cover pavement. Gusty crosswinds may create drifting snow, making traction difficult even for four-wheel-drive vehicles. CDOT warns that conditions can deteriorate quickly at higher elevations, especially along exposed stretches of U.S. Highway 40.

Travelers heading into the mountains should prepare for chain or traction law enforcement and possible temporary closures. Officials urge motorists to carry extra food, water, blankets and a flashlight in case traffic stalls. Road conditions are available by calling 511 or visiting cotrip.org.

Snow and blowing snow will continue overnight, with the most hazardous travel expected before 5 a.m. Thursday. Additional advisories could follow if bands intensify.
