Grand Junction, Colorado – Fire danger across western Colorado and eastern Utah will intensify through Friday as a series of Red Flag Warnings go into effect, signaling extreme wildfire risk for dozens of counties. Fast-moving gusts and humidity as low as 5 percent have officials urging residents to avoid any outdoor burning and remain on alert.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, Red Flag Warnings remain active for the region from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day through Friday, impacting key areas including the Little Snake, Routt, White River, Gunnison Basin, Colorado River Headwaters, North Fork, Book Cliffs, Paradox Valley, and the Eastern Ashley National Forest. Southwest winds may gust up to 40 mph, drying out grasses and timber and raising the chance that any spark could quickly turn into a fast-moving wildfire.

In communities such as Grand Junction, Craig, Steamboat Springs, Rifle, and Durango, fire officials are asking everyone to secure equipment, avoid campfires, and refrain from yard work that might throw sparks. Utility crews and first responders are preparing for rapid fire growth, especially along Highway 50 and the I-70 corridor, where roadside ignitions remain a concern.

With several days of critical fire weather expected, residents should have an emergency plan, keep mobile devices charged, and stay tuned for local updates. Outdoor burning and fireworks are strongly discouraged until these warnings expire.

Red Flag Warnings are expected to remain in effect through 8 p.m. Friday, with additional advisories possible if winds and low humidity persist.
