Grand Junction, CO – A winter weather advisory takes effect at 4 p.m. Friday, bringing heavy snowfall and gusty winds to Colorado’s mountain regions. The advisory includes Elkhead and Park Mountains, the Flat Tops, and the Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will range from 4 to 12 inches depending on elevation. The heaviest accumulations are expected above the timberline, where snowfall could reach or exceed 12 inches in localized areas. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, reducing visibility and making driving conditions hazardous.
The advisory lasts until 5 p.m. Saturday, with travel impacts likely on mountain passes and highways. Roads are expected to become slick and snow-packed, especially overnight and during early morning commutes. Travelers are advised to slow down and exercise caution on affected routes, particularly in areas like Aspen, Vail, Snowmass, Columbine, and Trappers Lake.
The combination of moderate to heavy snowfall and strong winds increases the risk of road closures or delays. Weather officials recommend checking road conditions before traveling. Dial 511 for updates specific to Colorado highways.
Residents are urged to prepare for possible disruptions. Those in higher elevations should secure outdoor items to prevent wind damage and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. If traveling is necessary, pack an emergency kit with warm clothing, water, and food.
The storm is part of an active weather pattern affecting the western U.S., bringing much-needed moisture to the region’s snowpack. However, the storm’s intensity could challenge weekend plans for outdoor recreation or travel.
