Granby, CO – A fatal multi-vehicle crash shut down Highway 40 in both directions near Granby Friday night, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. on October 24, 2025, near Mile Post 214, east of City Market in Granby. Authorities said one person was killed in the collision, which involved multiple vehicles.

According to officials, Highway 40 will remain closed for several hours as the Colorado State Patrol conducts its accident investigation. The sheriff’s office confirmed that County Road 55 (Cottonwood Pass) is serving as an alternate route for both directions, though it is not recommended for commercial vehicles due to terrain and road conditions.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area and check the Colorado Department of Transportation (COtrip.org) for real-time updates on travel conditions and closures.

Officials have not released the identity of the victim as of Saturday morning, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
