Grand Junction, Colorado – Scattered thunderstorms and powerful wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected across southwestern and central Colorado today, especially near the San Juan Mountains. Hazy skies from ongoing wildfires will add to the hazards as storms sweep the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, strong outflow winds could accompany afternoon storms, particularly across southern Colorado. The agency warns that when thunder roars, residents should head indoors immediately to avoid lightning danger. In addition, wildfire smoke will continue to reduce visibility and air quality across affected areas.
Drivers on U.S. Highway 160, CO-550, and other high-elevation roads near Telluride, Durango, and Pagosa Springs should watch for sudden wind gusts and limited visibility. Wildfire smoke may be especially dense in the Cortez and Gunnison areas. Residents with respiratory conditions are urged to stay inside and use air filters if available.
Storms may linger into the evening, with more showers possible on Wednesday. Stay alert for additional warnings throughout the day.
