Grand Junction, CO – Western Colorado residents are being urged to prepare for severe weather this afternoon as thunderstorms move into the region. Forecasters say storms could bring large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding, particularly near burn scars.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, the greatest risk for severe storms runs from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, September 12. Showers will continue through the morning before giving way to more widespread storms in the late afternoon.

Officials say storms will likely become strong to severe in some areas, producing large hail and wind gusts capable of downing trees or damaging property. Flash flooding is also a concern, especially in flood-prone and recently burned areas where runoff could develop quickly.

Forecasters add that the storms may linger into the evening before weakening and moving out overnight. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and monitor weather alerts throughout the day.

The NWS advises residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to take shelter indoors if storms approach.
