Grand Junction, Colorado – Dry lightning and gusty winds could spark fire concerns Saturday across western Colorado, as afternoon thunderstorms collide with summer-like heat in the mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, isolated storms will develop after 2 p.m., favoring high terrain along the I-70 corridor and San Juans. While rainfall is expected to be minimal, lightning and 30+ mph wind gusts could create localized hazards, especially in dry brush and forested areas.

Saturday’s high temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to mid-90s across the Western Slope, including Grand Junction, Montrose, and Rifle. Skies will remain mostly sunny through midday, but storm clouds could roll in by late afternoon. Outdoor activities in elevated areas like the Flat Tops or Uncompahgre Plateau may face brief interruptions.

Residents are urged to avoid open flames, secure loose items, and monitor alerts for rapidly changing weather. Hikers and campers should plan for lightning safety, especially above tree line.

Relief is on the way: By Monday, deeper moisture could shift the pattern toward more widespread rain and cooler highs in the 70s. Stay tuned for updated advisories heading into the new week.
