Pueblo, Colo. – Strong thunderstorms packing 60 mph winds and one-inch hail could strike Colorado’s eastern plains this afternoon, prompting safety alerts from meteorologists across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the storms are expected to develop between mid and late afternoon on Sunday, especially near Springfield, Lamar, and the I-25 corridor eastward. The greatest risk zone stretches from Las Animas County through Baca and Prowers counties, with storms rapidly moving eastward into Kansas by evening.

Communities in the Level 2 (Slight Risk) zone—including Springfield and areas near the Colorado-Kansas border—should prepare for localized wind damage and hail accumulation. Outdoor events should be rescheduled, and residents are urged to stay weather-aware throughout the day. The chance of tornadoes remains low, but the potential for damaging wind and hail is moderate.

Drivers should be alert for sudden downpours and poor visibility on Highways 50 and 287. Secure outdoor furniture and prepare for brief power outages. If you hear thunder, head indoors immediately.

Storms are expected to taper off tonight, but additional updates from NWS Pueblo are likely if activity intensifies or shifts.
