Colorado Springs, CO – Friday afternoon could bring lightning, gusty winds, and a heightened fire danger to parts of southern Colorado as thunderstorms develop over higher terrain and drift into the area. The National Weather Service warns that storms forming after noon may produce dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning, gusty outflow winds near 45 mph, and brief downpours, especially west of the I-25 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, storms will be most active over the mountains before moving toward the Plains by late afternoon. While rainfall amounts are expected to be light—often less than a tenth of an inch—the combination of lightning and dry fuels could spark new fire starts. Outdoor events, hiking, and backcountry travel should be planned with quick shelter options in mind.

This round of storms marks the start of a wetter pattern, with chances for showers and thunderstorms continuing daily into early next week. Lightning safety remains critical through the weekend, as even non-severe storms can be deadly.
