COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Central and southern Colorado are under heightened weather alerts this week as thunderstorms, flash flooding, and mountain snow threaten to impact travel and outdoor plans. The National Weather Service in Pueblo warns of flooding risks in the San Juan Mountains and strong thunderstorms spreading into the Front Range through midweek.

Early Tuesday brings a few light showers before gradual clearing, with highs near 70°F in the Springs. Skies will brighten by afternoon, but another round of scattered thunderstorms could develop Wednesday and Thursday — especially across the foothills and higher terrain. Winds may gust up to 30 mph, adding to travel difficulties along I-25 and U.S. 50.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall combined with melting snow could cause localized flooding across saturated areas of the Upper Rio Grande Valley and eastern San Juan Mountains. Above 10,000 feet, wet snow and slushy roads will make for challenging mountain driving through tonight.

Conditions improve Friday into the weekend with drier, sunnier weather and highs in the 60s to low 70s, but chilly nights in the 30s will remind Coloradans that fall is settling in fast.
