Colorado Springs, Colo. – Afternoon storms could rattle southern and central Colorado Thursday as lightning, gusty winds, and brief downpours move across the high country and nearby foothills. Strong outflow winds up to 40 mph may sweep over the Raton Mesa, Palmer Divide, and southeast mountain zones, creating travel and outdoor hazards.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, scattered thunderstorms will develop mainly over higher terrain through the evening, with localized moderate rainfall possible. The threat continues Friday into early next week, though storms will be more isolated and confined mostly to the mountains. Lightning and gusty winds remain the main concerns.

Drivers along U.S. 50 near Pueblo and I-25 between Colorado Springs and Trinidad should use caution if storms roll in during the afternoon commute. Outdoor events in El Paso and Teller counties may also be interrupted by lightning. Campers and hikers in the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains should prepare for rapidly changing skies and have shelter nearby.

The region turns drier and sunnier Friday, though storm chances return late Saturday into Sunday. More widespread activity is possible again early next week.
