Colorado – Dry air is already settling over southern Colorado this morning, and conditions are primed to turn dangerous fast as winds increase and humidity drops. Fire risk will spike sharply by late morning, especially along the I-25 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m., with southwest winds between 15 and 20 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Relative humidity could fall as low as 9 percent, creating critical fire weather conditions.
Across Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and surrounding counties, any spark could spread quickly. Avoid outdoor burning, limit equipment use that creates sparks, and secure trailer chains while traveling.
Road conditions remain dry, but strong crosswinds may impact drivers on I-25, Highway 50, and open rural roads. High-profile vehicles should use extra caution, especially during peak afternoon winds.
This is only the first phase of a major pattern shift. By Tuesday, cooler air moves in with increasing chances for showers. Rain becomes more likely Tuesday night, with a 50 percent chance of precipitation spreading across the region.
By Wednesday, showers become more widespread, with rain chances increasing to 70 percent and even a slight chance of thunderstorms. Snow is expected in the mountains, while lower elevations remain mostly rain.
Conditions stay unsettled into Thursday, with additional showers and breezy conditions continuing before gradual clearing later in the week.
This week highlights a dramatic swing from fire danger to wetter spring weather across southern Colorado. Stay alert and prepared as conditions change quickly. Are winds picking up where you are this morning?
