Colorado Springs, Colo. – Frost is about to paint the fields white across southern Colorado as one of the coldest mornings of the season looms. After a crisp sunrise and calm, dry air today, temperatures will tumble sharply into the 20s by daybreak Wednesday — ending the growing season for much of the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a widespread hard freeze is expected across the San Luis Valley, El Paso County, and the southern plains late Tuesday night. Residents should drain sprinkler systems, disconnect garden hoses, and protect exposed pipes. Farmers and gardeners should cover any remaining fall crops or potted plants. At the same time, strong sunshine and very low humidity will heighten wildfire danger this afternoon, especially west of I-25 from Alamosa through Walsenburg.
Winds will ease tonight, leaving clear skies and calm air ideal for rapid temperature drops. By Wednesday afternoon, high pressure brings full sun and a slow rebound — highs near 56°F in Colorado Springs and around 60°F in Pueblo.
Thursday continues mild with highs in the lower 60s and light winds. Halloween Friday looks seasonably cool and bright, ideal for trick-or-treaters, with evening readings in the 40s. The weekend trends warmer again, hinting at an early taste of November sunshine.
After all, winter can wait — for now.
