COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A sharp fall chill is tightening its grip on southern Colorado as the season’s first Freeze Warning takes effect late Saturday. Temperatures across El Paso, Pueblo, and Fremont counties are expected to plunge into the mid-20s by early Sunday, threatening unprotected pipes, late-season crops, and outdoor plants.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, subfreezing temperatures are likely between 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Widespread frost will blanket the I-25 corridor, from Colorado Springs south to Walsenburg and La Junta. Homeowners should take steps today to insulate outdoor plumbing, bring pets indoors, and cover sensitive vegetation before the deep chill settles in. Travel impacts remain minor, but icy patches are possible in low-lying areas before sunrise.

Sunday brings full sun and lighter winds, helping temperatures rebound into the upper 70s by afternoon. However, another frosty start is possible Monday morning as calm, dry air lingers across the Front Range. Winds will increase slightly Monday afternoon, gusting up to 20 mph, with highs climbing into the low 70s.

By midweek, the region turns milder and breezy with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s and no precipitation expected. The calm, sunny stretch will offer ideal conditions for fall yard work, pumpkin-patch visits, and Halloween decorating — but tonight’s hard freeze marks a clear seasonal shift.

Protect plants, pets, and pipes before sunset — this first true taste of winter means business.
