Colorado Springs, Colorado – Strong thunderstorms could bring flash flooding, large hail and damaging wind gusts to southeastern Colorado beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through Saturday evening. Areas near recent burn scars are especially vulnerable, and travel across I-25 could be impacted by sudden storm development and low visibility.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, thunderstorms will develop over the high terrain this afternoon, then drift into the eastern plains. These storms could deliver wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail, with rainfall rates high enough to cause flash flooding in urban areas and steep canyons. Affected areas include the San Luis Valley, Wet Mountains, Rampart Range, and eastern El Paso, Pueblo, and Las Animas counties.

Localized flooding is most likely near burn scars, such as the Decker and Spring Creek fire zones. Motorists are urged to avoid low-lying roads and keep emergency kits ready. Lightning and brief power outages may accompany storms.

Drier, hotter conditions return Sunday, but isolated storms may linger in mountain zones. Warnings remain in effect through Saturday night, with additional advisories possible as storms evolve.
