COLORADO — Flakes will soon start falling across the Front Range, and by Wednesday, Denver drivers could face the season’s first significant winter weather event, with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected across the metro and foothill regions.

The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from midnight to 6 p.m. Wednesday, warning of hazardous travel along I-70 and I-25 as snow builds quickly through the morning commute. The heaviest accumulation is expected near the base of the foothills, where totals may top 6 inches by late afternoon.

Residents should plan ahead. Roads will become slick and visibility may drop, particularly through the Denver, Boulder, and Castle Rock areas. Snowfall will likely start after midnight and continue steadily through midday Wednesday before tapering off.

Meteorologists say this early-December system will hit fast — a quick-moving front bringing temperatures near freezing by daybreak Wednesday. The snow may initially melt on warmer pavement but will refreeze later, leading to dangerous slick spots through the evening. Flash-freezing is possible as winds shift northeast and colder air deepens behind the front.

After the snow clears, a cold but sunny stretch will return for the weekend, with highs only in the 40s and lows in the teens to 20s.

Five-Day Denver–Boulder Outlook:

  • Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, high 48°F.
  • Tonight: Snow developing late, low 25°F.
  • Wednesday: Snow, 3–6″, high 30°F, low 13°F.
  • Thursday: Sunny, high 40°F.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, high 42°F.
  • Saturday: 20% chance of rain/snow mix, high 48°F.
