Lamar, Colo. – Residents across southeastern Colorado face a severe thunderstorm threat Friday evening as a watch remains in effect until 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Las Animas, Lincoln, Otero, and Prowers counties are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. Storms developing late this afternoon could bring damaging winds over 60 mph, large hail, and brief heavy downpours.

Emergency officials warn that travel on Highways 50 and 287 could be impacted as storms track eastward through Otero and Prowers counties. Strong outflow winds may down tree limbs and power lines, creating the risk of isolated outages. Rural areas, especially near Springfield and Lamar, should prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

Residents are urged to move indoors if warnings are issued and to secure outdoor items ahead of the storms. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and be alert for reduced visibility in heavy rain.

The watch remains in effect through late evening, and additional warnings may be issued as storms intensify.
