Denver, Colorado – Damaging winds and large hail could impact parts of northeast Colorado Friday afternoon as strong to severe thunderstorms move into the region, prompting warnings for residents from Fort Morgan to Burlington.

According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, the storm threat begins around 2 p.m. Friday and may linger through 8 p.m., with counties along the Colorado-Kansas border facing the highest risk. A marginal to slight risk for severe weather includes cities such as Sterling, Akron, and Limon. An isolated tornado is also possible.

Gusts over 60 mph and hail larger than quarters could affect travel on I-76 and U.S. 385. Power outages and property damage are possible, especially in open or rural areas. Residents should secure outdoor items and have a method to receive weather alerts.

The threat marks one of the first widespread severe weather days this spring for eastern Colorado, which often sees active patterns in late May.

Severe weather watches may be issued ahead of the storms. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and avoid unnecessary travel during peak hours of the event.
