Denver, Colo. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt this afternoon over the Palmer Divide and into the east-central Plains, bringing the threat of hail as large as two inches in diameter and wind gusts topping 60 mph. The storms will build by midafternoon and could linger into the evening, raising hazards for drivers, outdoor events, and vulnerable infrastructure.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, a few storms may become strong enough to produce isolated tornadoes, especially east of the I-25 corridor toward Limon and Burlington. The highest risk zones include Castle Rock, Colorado Springs, and rural counties along the Kansas border.

Hail of this size can damage vehicles, shatter windows, and strip crops, while wind gusts over 60 mph may topple trees and power lines. Residents are urged to secure outdoor property, move vehicles under cover, and stay indoors when storms approach. Lightning will also pose a risk for those outdoors.

Storm chances will taper off late tonight, but additional storm activity remains possible Sunday.
