Golden, CO – Scammers are targeting Colorado residents with fraudulent text messages that falsely claim to be from the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office warned Thursday.

According to a social media alert posted by the Sheriff’s Office, the messages demand immediate payment for alleged traffic violations, threaten suspension of driving privileges, and direct recipients to click on suspicious links. Authorities stressed that these messages are not legitimate and urged Coloradans not to interact with them in any way.

“DMV will never send unsolicited texts or emails demanding payment, threatening prosecution, or claiming your driving privileges are about to be suspended,” the department stated.

The scam texts, which appear to be official, claim that enforcement penalties will begin on June 6 if recipients fail to pay a fictitious fine by June 5. Listed penalties include vehicle registration suspension and additional fees. The messages often ask users to reply or click on a link to make payment—both tactics intended to extract personal or financial data.

Officials advise residents to take the following steps:

  • Do not click any links.
  • Do not share any personal or financial information.
  • Do not reply to the message.

If contacted, individuals should report the scam via the official Colorado DMV website at https://dmv.colorado.gov/fraud-alertsscams.

Authorities urge the public to stay cautious and to verify any suspicious messages directly through official state channels.
