Pueblo, Colorado – Drivers across southern Colorado should brace for dangerous travel conditions Monday as winds gusting to 50 mph sweep across the region. Blowing dust is expected to reduce visibility along highways including US-160 and I-25, especially through the San Luis Valley and areas east of the Continental Divide.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, strong southwest winds will begin around 10 a.m. Monday, lasting through the evening. While fire danger remains lower than last week due to ongoing green-up, areas with dry grass and light fuels could still see rapid fire spread.
The Continental Divide will also see accumulating snow starting early Monday and continuing through morning. Higher elevations above 10,000 feet, such as the Eastern San Juan and Mosquito Ranges, may receive 4 to 8 inches of snow, with blowing and drifting possible. Hikers, campers, and mountain travelers should prepare for winter-like conditions.
Thunderstorms are likely Monday afternoon and evening across Pueblo, Trinidad, and Walsenburg, with a 40% chance of development. Small hail and lightning are the primary threats. Rainfall totals will remain light, generally under a tenth of an inch.
