Grand Junction, Colorado – Wildfire danger is set to climb across southwest Colorado and into northwest Colorado as Red Flag Warnings take effect Friday, driven by soaring temperatures and strong winds that will last through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Red Flag Warning will be in place for Friday, with a Fire Weather Watch already posted for Saturday. Meteorologists warn that gusty winds and warm, dry air will combine to create critical fire weather conditions, especially in areas around Grand Junction and across southwest Colorado. Elevated fire concerns will extend through Sunday, with wind posing a bigger threat than rain as a storm system moves through the Great Basin.

Communities including Montrose, Durango, and Craig should prepare for the possibility of rapid fire spread. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose outdoor items, and keep cell phones charged for emergency alerts. A few isolated showers and mountain thunderstorms may develop, but widespread rain is not expected to ease fire risk.

Critical fire weather alerts will remain active through Saturday, with additional advisories possible as conditions evolve. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates and take steps to prevent new fires this weekend.
