Grand Junction, Colorado – 40 mph wind gusts are accelerating wildfire spread through Saturday evening, creating dangerous fire conditions across northwest Colorado and threatening rapid ignition in dry terrain.
Strong, gusty winds will persist through the afternoon and evening, with sustained speeds of 25 to 40 mph combining with extremely dry air. Relative humidity is expected to fall as low as 11% to 16%, allowing grasses, brush, and timber fuels to dry out quickly and become highly flammable.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Red Flag Warning is in effect today and Sunday for northwest Colorado, including areas around Grand Junction, Craig, Meeker, and Rangely. The most critical window for fire growth runs from midday through the evening hours, when winds peak and humidity bottoms out.
Any spark—from campfires, equipment, or vehicles along corridors like I-70 and U.S. 40—could ignite fast-moving wildfires capable of spreading rapidly across open land and into wooded areas. Fire crews may face extreme difficulty containing new starts under these conditions.
Residents and visitors should avoid all outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay activities that could produce sparks. Outdoor recreation in fire-prone areas should be approached with caution.
Critical fire weather conditions will continue through Sunday and possibly into Monday before a shift toward cooler, more unsettled weather arrives by Tuesday. Additional warnings or extensions remain possible.
